How To Support Your Child For Their First Tournament

It’s natural to be a little anxious at your child’s first tennis tournament – parents too! So relax and your children will too. As a parent, your role is to encourage and support your child—not stress them out. Keep it real and don’t put high expectations on your children. Ease off and watch their performance improve. A tennis match is stressful for younger players as they need to play out and finish the match on their own without any help from umpires, coaches or parents.

A tennis match is stressful for younger players as they need to play out and finish the match on their own and score—without any help from umpires, coaches or parents.

Coaches are not allowed to give any advice to players during the match, the young player is alone on the tennis court and the only way to help them is to encourage them with short encouraging words and positive gestures.

During a tennis match, there are many situations where the player experiences frustration, disappointment and sometimes anger. Unless they manage their emotions well, they won’t perform well. Be a positive role model and help your child manage their emotions by always being positive and encouraging.

Show your child through your body language and facial expressions that you believe in them. You know they’re doing their best and you’re with them every step of the way—win or lose.
